The passport of a citizen of South Ossetia for the first time after the recognition of the independence of the Republic (26 August 2008) has given the right to transatlantic travel. From the United States to the Russian Federation came a citizen of South Ossetia Joe Mestas, not having Russian citizenship.

As Joe Mestas has told the news agency "Res", to come from the United States to Russia on the South Ossetian passport was not easy.
"The U.S. and Russian border staff needed many hours of consultation to decide whether or not let me pass. In the end it was made a positive decision ", - he said.
Joe Mestas is a citizen of both the U.S. and South Ossetia. His wife is a native of Dzau district of South Ossetia. During Georgia's attack on South Ossetia in 2008, she, with her infant daughter, was in the zone of the Georgian bombardment of military aviation, having escaped by a miracle. Joe Mestas has done much work for the U.S. public to learn the truth about the tragic events.
