It is proposed to declare June 20 – the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Ossetian People’s Genocide

The Commission on the Memorialization of the Genocide committed against South Ossetians by the Georgian Democratic Republic in 1920 discussed an action plan dedicated to the centenary of genocide. The meeting was held in Tskhinval, chaired by Prime Minister Eric Pukhaev.

One of the commission’s members, the Adviser to the President, Konstantin Pukhaev, proposed introducing the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Ossetian Genocide into the plan under discussion.

"The corresponding letter has already been sent to the head of state - Anatoly Bibilov, it is proposed to declare June 20 – the Day of Remembrance of the victims of the genocide of the Ossetian people, since this mournful date is associated with the shooting of 13 communards," said Pukhaev.

Advisor to the President Konstantin Kochiev, in turn, made a proposal to reprint the book “Ethnic Cleansing against Ossetians by Georgia” by Inga Kochieva and Alexei Margity.

“In addition, I propose to develop and approve the symbol of genocide so that there is an official emblem of this sad date,” he stressed.

Rector of the A. A Tibilov South Ossetian State University, Vadim Tedeev, for his part, focused on the events to mark the centenary of international genocide.

“We are well aware of the events of the 20s, it is important that the whole world knows about them. Therefore, it would be advisable to hold the events on the territory of Russia, as well as to attract an expert community from outside the Republic to international sessions and conferences in South Ossetia,” the rector noted.

At the meeting, issues of publishing thematic editions under the authorship of Konstantin Pukhaev and Ruslan Bzarov were also discussed; the latter is planned to be issued in English, French, German, Spanish, and Georgian.

The issues of designing and constructing a memorial object to perpetuate the memory of the victims of the genocide of the Ossetian people, organizing optional classes in educational institutions on the struggle of the Ossetian people for freedom and independence, and conducting thematic scientific sessions and conferences were also raised.
