Representatives of the Center for Rescue Operations of Special Risk “Leader” EMERCOM of Russia arrived in the Republic. They will continue working on the mechanical cleaning of the territories of South Ossetia from explosive objects, the press service of the Ministry of Emergencies reports.

The ministry has noted that, together with South Ossetian colleagues, sappers have already begun to determine the location of demining activities.

Despite the fact that the four-year mine clearance program has been completed, there are areas that pose a threat to the population of the Republic. Given this danger, it was decided to continue the work next year.

“It's nice to see you again in our Republic to discuss such a significant issue. We are grateful to the leadership of the Russian Federation and Ministry for Emergencies for the assistance provided. Over the years, a lot of work has been done, but we still have to cooperate in this area, there are still dangerous areas. For our part, we are ready to fulfill our commitments,” emphasized First Deputy Minister for Emergency Situations Atsamaz Bestauty.

The South Ossetian side is committed to resettlement and deployment of the detachment of the Leader Center, as well as round-the-clock protection of the territories where specialists will be working.

“We arrived on behalf of our leadership to discuss upcoming work. We need to develop schemes according to maps, to determine the territories that are subject to clearance. The most important thing is to discuss the start and completion dates, and report this to our management for a decision,” said Anatoly Savvin, Head of the Leader Center for Emergency Situations.

It is planned that in 2020 sappers will clear three points in Tskhinvali district, which will be determined by the Ministry of Emergencies.

In 2016, sappers began to implement a program to assist the Republic of South Ossetia in matters of mine clearance. For four years, sappers examined territories with a total area of 172 hectares, 1,023 explosive ordnances were neutralized.
