On May 20, South Ossetia will host a commemorative action “Light a candle in memory of the perished! Light it in your soul and never blow it out”, dedicated to the 29th anniversary of the Zar tragedy, the press service of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic reports.

“On this day, flowers and wreaths will be laid at the monument to the victims of the tragedy in the village of Zar, Tskhinval district. The names of the victims will be announced at the event, a mourning rally will be held,” the press service said.

They noted that on the occasion of the memorable date, a documentary chronicle "Memory and Sorrow" will be shown on the state television, thematic TV programs will be presented on the air of the State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company "Ir", materials will be published on the media pages.

29 years have passed since the day of one of the most monstrous tragedies in the history of South Ossetia – the Za tragedyr. On May 20, 1992, 33 people: women, children and old people were shot by Georgian neo-fascists on the Zar road. At the site of the tragedy in 2007, the "Grieving Mother" obelisk was erected - an image of a woman protecting her child at the behest of a maternal instinct pierces the heart, evoking a feeling of deepest compassion. Every year, residents of the Republic gather at this place. Every year relatives of the victims, the leadership of the Republic, youth and adults - all people who are not indifferent to this tragedy come here. Large-scale memorial meetings are held here every year.
