A meeting between the South Ossetian and Georgian delegations and the representatives of the EUMM is planned to take place today in the village of Ergneti. As reported by the head of the South Ossetian delegation Merab Chigoev, the meeting is organized upon the EUMM initiative. “We will be raising the issue on the intensified activities of the Georgian armed forces through deployment of new illegal checkpoints, their equipping with offensive weaponry on the territories adjacent to the state border of South Ossetia. We will also draw the EUMM’s attention to the fact that these actions of the Georgian side will increase tensions and destructive approach towards post-conflict settlement”, underscored Chigoev.
According to him, it was also planned to discuss the incident which took place on 29 July at 23:10, when two shots were made from a Georgian village in the direction of the southern suburbs of Tskhinval. He underlined that such incidents in the area of the EUMM responsibility became regular. “We cannot understand how these provocations could have happened unnoticeable by the EUMM. It is either their shortsightedness or connivance. It is unacceptable. We will point to the EUMM on the necessity to fully implement their duties in accordance with the scope of responsibilities they were entrusted with by the Geneva discussions.“
It is worth reminding that the decision on the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism was achieved at the fourth round of the Geneva talks on 17-18 February 2009. The first IPRM meeting was held on 23 April 2009.
