The government of South Ossetia has made a decision to prolong the term of stay of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) representation in the Republic. This relevant resolution has been adopted at the today's session of the government, conducted by the Prime Minister Vadim Brovtsev. The question was brought up for discussion by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the RSO Murat Dzhioev.According to the adopted resolution, the term of stay of ICRC in South Ossetia is prolonged till October, 1, 2012.

As Murat Dzhioev has noted, the Red Cross is the only international organization which is carrying out its activity in the Republic.«The Red Cross realizes its basic activities during the military operations and though at present there are no any military actions here, this organization is officially accredited in the Republic. As far as the other international humanitarian organizations politicize their activities, they do not wish to open their representations in South Ossetia. Through the ICRC we have implemented many projects. Besides, the organization resolves some issues which we cannot settle, owing to political relationship with the neighboring states. It is the only link between our citizens who are in prisons of Georgia and those who are here», - Dzhioev has told.He has underlined that the Red Cross is the only international intermediary between the two states. As a result of the discussion the majority of members of the government have voted for prolonging the term of staying of this organization in South Ossetia for one more year.It should be noted, that ICRC has been functioning in the territory of the RSO since August, 2004. Since August, 20, 2008 ICRC has resumed its activity, coordinating it from the territory of Russia on the basis of corresponding resolution of the leadership of South Ossetia.
