“The end of the 80s - the beginning of the 90s were difficult years, a difficult time for the entire South Ossetian people,” said Philip Khachirov, commander of the battalion of the Joint Order and Peace Forces for the South Ossetian part, opening a rally dedicated to the 27th anniversary of the deployment of peacekeeping forces in South Ossetia.

According to him, it was at this time, in July 1992, that peacekeeping forces were brought into South Ossetia. “This was done by the efforts of the great Russia, and we are grateful to the Russian people for this invaluable help. For many years the peacekeeping forces made every effort for a peaceful settlement of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict. But despite this, in August of 2008, the enemy treacherously attacked South Ossetia,” Khachirov reminded the rally participants of the latest events in the history of South Ossetia.

He has noted that it was at the venue of the rally, where a memorial monument to peacekeepers is now installed, one of the frontiers of military events. “The blood of South Ossetia’s defenders is shed here. We remember and honor the memory of the fallen peacekeepers, Russian soldiers and officers. Thank you for your work for the sake of peace in the land of South Ossetia,” said Khachirov.

Unique operation

According to the head of state Anatoly Bibilov, all the people of South Ossetia remember how 27 years ago, a column of peacekeeping forces marched down the 8th of June street and with what joy the residents of the Republic greeted them.

“People with tears in their eyes and flowers stood along the street. The peacekeeping operation in South Ossetia fully justified itself. The people began to live peacefully, to return to their homes ... Quiet life continued for many years.

The peacekeeping operation was a success, and only in 2008, when the Georgian government once again adopted state terrorism, took radical measures in resolving the Georgian-Ossetian conflict, Russia had no other choice but to send troops and force the aggressor to peace. During the five-day war, peacekeepers, children, women, old people were killed ...”- said the President.

A minute of silence honored the memory of the fallen peacekeepers, local residents, all who gave their lives for the independence of South Ossetia.

Anatoly Bibilov has noted that this day is considered a holiday, the day that gave peace to South Ossetia. He congratulated everyone on the holiday and wished cheerfulness and achievement of goals.
