This day in history: On May 29, 2018, Syria recognized the independence of South Ossetia

The date of May 29 in the recent history of South Ossetia was marked by a number of fateful events. In May 1992, the Act of Declaration of Independence of the Republic of South Ossetia was adopted. And 26 years later, the independence of the State of Alania was recognized by another country - the Syrian Arab Republic.

4 years ago, at a solemn meeting in honor of the next anniversary of the adoption of the Act of Independence, it was announced the recognition of the independence of South Ossetia by Syria. This country became the eighth in a row to recognize the independence of the Republic.

On the official websites of the foreign affairs agencies of South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Syria, on the same day and hour, a communiqué appeared stating: “Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia, authorized by its government, has the honor to declare that the Republic of South Ossetia and the Syrian Arab Republic, reaffirming their commitment to the fundamental principles of international law, striving to establish and develop full-scale political, economic and cultural cooperation and interaction between the two states for the benefit of their peoples, acting in accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of April 18, 1961 and the Vienna Convention on Consular relations of April 23, 1963, announce mutual recognition and the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries at the level of embassies.

South Ossetia and Syria signed a Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, which provides for cooperation in almost all spheres of life.

Geography of recognition

The first country to recognize the independence of the Republic of South Ossetia was Russia on August 26, 2008.

However, back in November 2006, the Republics of South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Pridnestrovian Moldavian and Nagorno-Karabakh recognized each other as independent states. And even earlier, in 2000, meetings of foreign ministers and an advisory council at the level of experts were established between these republics.

After recognition by Russia, on September 9, 2008, diplomatic relations were established between South Ossetia and Russia.

Russia gave a start to many states, and the number of countries that recognized South Ossetia increased every year.

Immediately after Russia, on September 3, 2008, the recognition followed from the Republic of Nicaragua. A year later, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and Nauru repeated this step.

On September 19, 2011, the independence of South Ossetia was recognized by the state of Tuvalu. And in 2015 - Luhansk and Donetsk People's Republics.

On May 29, 2018, the Republic of South Ossetia was recognized -by the Syrian Arab Republic.
