President of South Ossetia Anatoly Bibilov addressed his compatriots in connection with the next anniversary of the tragedy that took place in the Republic on April 29, 1991 - an earthquake in Dzau district.
“A destructive earthquake took place in South Ossetia 29 years ago. 59 people became the victims of the strongest tremors, dozens were injured, the Dzau district center along with all the infrastructure was destroyed. As a result of the natural disaster, the village of Khakhet turned out to be under a landslide.
The number of the dead could have been much higher if not for the mass rally of protest against the policy of the Georgian authorities, which was attended by almost the entire population of Dzau. This allowed us to avoid more numerous victims.
South Ossetia still has not recovered from the natural disaster. Even after almost three decades, the bitterness of loss is still strong. We will remember and honor the memory of each victim, " the text of the message of the head of state reads.
