A massive artillery bombardment of populated areas of South Ossetia, which began on August 1, lasted throughout the night. Six people were killed and twelve injured.
In the night of August 2, the Georgian side has brought down fire on the sleeping town. Heavy fire from automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades was conducted upon the uptown. The ambulances, which were delivering the wounded to the hospital, also came under fire.

July 30, 2008 the KGB of South Ossetia issued a statement that the Georgian side in order to destabilize the political situation in South Ossetia and to extrude the Ossetian population from the territory of the Republic, intended to continue the policy of escalation of tension in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict.
Georgian special services committed a series of terrorist acts, sending eight car bombs into the territory of South Ossetia.
