Taimuraz Kusov: the role of peacekeeping forces is crucial for people of South Ossetia

14/07/2012 - 13:47

Flash-poll: July 14, South Ossetia will celebrate the 20th anniversary of entering the Joint Peacekeeping Forces into the Georgian-Ossetian conflict. What is the role of peacekeepers in protecting the population of South Ossetia?

Boris Chochiev, former co-chair of the Joint Control Commission on the South Ossetian side:
The format of the peacekeeping operation, which was being conducted in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict from 1992 to 2008, is unique in the world. For the first time in the history of peacekeeping operations, it involved not only the Russian Federation as the chief mediator and guarantor of peace, but also the peacekeepers, representing the parties, involved in the conflict. During the period from the date of the peacekeepers entry until the ultra radical nationalist and fascist Saakashvili came to power in Georgia in 2004, no one peacekeeper was killed.

At the Geneva talks the parties were not ready for compromise – expert

16/06/2012 - 20:10

The twentieth round of international discussions on security and stability in Transcaucasia has finished in Geneva.

How do you assess the outcome of the Geneva discussions?

Alexander Skakov, Candidate of History, coordinator of the Working Group of the Caucasus and Central Asia section under the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Federation:

The attitude to the Geneva process is double. On the one hand any debate - is good and it should be maintained. To expect some breakthrough, even minimal success in these negotiations is unreal; it is a purely technical site, because none of the parties is ready for compromise.

Irina Gagloeva: For 20 years we`ve lived through a hard historical trial, but we always look ahead with confidence

27/05/2012 - 17:39

Flash-poll: May 29, will be the 20 years anniversary of the Act of Independence of South Ossetia.

How successful, in your opinion, the Republic is building its statehood and what else should be done to strengthen it?

Alexander Skakov, Candidate of History, coordinator of the Working Group of the Caucasus and Central Asia department under the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Federation:

I think that South Ossetia has done much to strengthen its sovereignty as an independent country. And this is primarily due to the will of the Ossetian people. But the problems still exist. South Ossetia, in contrast to Abkhazia, has no outlet to the sea, and of course, all the contacts of South Ossetia with the outside world go through Russia. There is another nuance in this fact - a great influence of Russia on South Ossetia. And this influence has both the positive effects that were displayed in the events of 08.08.08, as well as the negative ones, displayed in the events connected with the presidential election. So the future of South Ossetia depends much on Russia's position to be consistent, accurate, objective, and not related to any personal predilections. In principle, South Ossetia has everything to move forward toward the formation of normal society: there are good people who are willing and able to work, literate intellectuals, beautiful nature. The question is, to make it all ok to use. In short, South Ossetia has all chances for further success.

The statement of NATO is rather like clearing site for military actions against South Ossetia and Abkhazia – an expert

21/05/2012 - 22:21

The EU supports Georgia through "soft power"

18/05/2012 - 11:04

The emergence of the next EU report on Georgia was not accidental. After coming to power in Georgia by Mikhail Saakashvili, the country's accession to the European Union ("the return to the European nation’s family") was proclaimed one of the foreign policy priorities. Despite the fact that Brussels has reacted to this idea without much enthusiasm, the EU flags have been raised over many state agencies of Georgia. It reminds many citizens of Tbilisi the foreign occupation.

Jana Amelina: Saakashvili may have cut off his head - it will change nothing

27/04/2012 - 16:43

The proposal of Saakashvili to resign is not interesting, not even acceptable, because it has no relation to reality. This has been said IA "Res" by a Chief of the Caucasus Research Department of the Russian Institute of Strategic Studies Jana Amelina, commenting on the statement by the president of Georgia on his readiness to resign, in order to return South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
