One of the promotional booklets for the XXIII Winter Olympic Games to be held from 9 to 25 February 2018 in Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea, reads: "The Olympic Games unite many countries, and people from all over the world are closely watching the sports opportunities of their compatriots."
However, speaking about the current Olympic Games, it would be more correct to use not the word "unite", but the word "separate".

In American foreign policy much attention is paid to the territories of the post-Soviet space. There are many reasons for this. In contrast, official Tbilisi continues to be a prisoner of the 1990s, keeping the West's policy of revanchism towards South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Against the background of the general stabilization of the situation in the Caucasus, recently it has made itself felt the smoldering conflict around Nagorno- Karabakh. Despite the abundance of political actors that are involved in its settlement, only Russia is interested in the effectiveness of the efforts to establish long-term peace. This is explained not only by humanistic, but also by completely pragmatic considerations.
The genocide of the people of South Ossetia, carried out by the Menshevik government of the so-called Georgian Democratic Republic in 1920, was a logical continuation of the course taken by Georgia in the Middle Ages to destroy South Ossetia not only politically but also as geographically. It is significant that, on the one hand, the Georgian Bolsheviks led by Ordzhonikidze acted as provokers of the uprising, while on the other hand, Georgian Mensheviks led by Jordania were the executioners of South Ossetia, under the guise of pressure.
The South Ossetian Soviet Democratic Republic was proclaimed in the USSR on September 20, 1990. In the USSR, the Constitution of the USSR must be observed. And in the Constitution of the USSR it is written that South Ossetia is part of the Georgian SSR. So South Ossetia in fact proclaiming the republic did not withdraw from the GSSR and did nothing to arouse suspicions of separatism.
Several Georgian deputies representing the ruling party "Georgian Dream" hinted at possible involvement in an unprecedented fire in the resort Borjomi Gorge of the "saboteurs who, probably, infiltrated there from neighboring South Ossetia." This statement was spread by the newspaper Kommersant and commented on by a political observer Inal Pliev.
Georgian border guards did not allow the residents of the Ossetian village of Kob to travel to Georgia, who decided to celebrate a religious holiday in their native village. Moreover, some without explanation of the reasons in the passport put stamps on deportation for 5 years.
Referring to the orders of their superiors, the Georgian border guards stated that no any Ossetian would come to the territory of the village of Kob.
