The possibility of adopting a new Constitution of South Ossetia and the implications of the amendments to the Constitution of the Republic in 2001 have been discussed by the participants of the conference, "The Constitution of South Ossetia: the Past, the Present, the Prospects". The event is timed to the Constitution Day being celebrated today in South Ossetia.

The conference organizer, Chairman of the State Committee for Information and Press of South Ossetia Vyacheslav Gobozov addressed the participants. In his view, numerous amendments and additions have adversely affected the Constitution of South Ossetia.
"Today our Constitution is unprotected; those mechanisms of protection that were built originally have failed to prevent a considerable number of amendments. We have to completely revise the Basic Law of South Ossetia ", - said Gobozov.
Attorney General of the RSO Merab Chigoev has also pointed out the shortcomings and inconsistencies in the Basic Law.
"At a time when the Constitution was adopted, it seemed to us the most acceptable, but times are changing and today our Republic is at another stage of development. Therefore, we have to prepare the document, which would correspond to today's realities and bring it up for referendum, "- said Chigoev.
About the need to adopt a new constitution also spoke a head of the Bar Association Anatoly Khugaev.
"Without adopting a new constitution in the future it will be inevitable the errors in the government formation and in international relations, - he said. -We need to make fundamental changes in the Constitution as a whole, and in the inviolable chapters 1 and 2, - that means the adoption of the new Constitution."
According to the deputy of the Parliament of South Ossetia Gennady Kokoev, frequent changes in the Constitution have a negative impact on the political situation and on the external image of South Ossetia.
"To change the Constitution several times for 20 years - is a sign of political instability, which is not good for the Republic as a whole", - said Kokoev.
The panelists agreed to continue the discussion on this topic in different formats, engaging the widest range of public.
It should be noted that today in South Ossetia is being celebrated the Constitution Day. The document was adopted by the national referendum on April 8, 2001. Prior to that, in the Republic was in force the first Constitution, adopted in November 1993.
