The US in every possible has been motivating Georgia to restore the so-called "territorial integrity," told the news agency "Res" South Ossetian political scientist Inal Sanakoev, commenting on the growing cooperation between Washington and Tbilisi in the military sphere.
In his opinion, the Georgian political elite would have long accepted the fact of the loss of "their territories", since in reality, South Ossetia and Abkhazia were never part of Georgia, only during the Soviet Union they were included in the Georgian SSR.
"The Western countries, especially the United States, are constantly urging Georgia to restore the "territorial integrity," and cooperation with the Americans gives them hope," - Sanakoev said.
The expert has recalled that in 2008 Saakashvili decided on aggression against South Ossetia, being convinced of the support of Americans.
"But the United States did not fight with Russia for the sake of Georgia," - summed up Sanakoev.
He has stressed that the course on Georgia's cooperation with the US and NATO was proclaimed long before 2008.
"This happened almost immediately after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Then the Georgian political elite decided to establish allied relations with the countries of the North Atlantic bloc, "Sanakoev continued. - The main motivation for such a foreign policy turn was the confrontation with Russia. Tbilisi began to treat Russia as a threat to its statehood and decided to seek for allies in the West."
The South Ossetian political analyst also commented on the transfer of some of the units of the South Ossetian Army to the Russian Armed Forces, calling the military agreement between the two countries an additional mechanism for ensuring the security of the Republic.
"The agreement on the transfer of part of the units of the Defense Ministry of South Ossetia to the Armed Forces of Russia should be regarded positively, as a factor enhancing the security of the Republic," Sanakoev concluded.
