South Ossetia, which has previously applied to the State Duma of the Russian Federation with a request to recognize the genocide of the Ossetian people in 1920, will make the same appeals to the other countries that recognized it, as well as to the EU and the UN, said President of the Republic Anatoly Bibilov.
"We will apply to those countries, first of all, which have recognized us. And, of course, we will send documents to the European Union. Of course, we do not expect any reaction from them, no doubt, but we will send all the materials to the European Union, as well as to the UN., "Anatoly Bibilov told RIA Novosti.
According to him, this can be expected in the fall, when the Parliament of South Ossetia will return from vacation. "By the centenary of the genocide we will definitely do it," Bibilov said.
In July 2019, the South Ossetian Parliament decided to appeal to the State Duma on the recognition of the genocide of the South Ossetian people by Georgia in 1920. The Speaker of the lower house of the Russian Parliament, Vyacheslav Volodin, said that the Council of the State Duma would consider the appeal at the next meeting.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that it would be good for the current Georgian authorities to know the long history of relations with the peoples of Abkhazia and South Ossetia if they want to establish relations with them today. Then the Russian President, in particular, noted the rigidity with which Georgian troops acted in Ossetia in 1919 and 1920, adding that "this is exactly what is called the genocide today."
