South Ossetia will take part in the World Cup under the auspices of the Confederation of Independent Football Associations (ConIFA) in 2020, Sergey Zasseev, head of the South Ossetian Youth policy, Sports and Tourism Committee, said at a press conference in Tskhinval.

“We, as winners of the European Championships, officially entered the tournament grid. Ahead of us is the World Cup, which must be held at the level. Undoubtedly, it will become an event of grandiose scale,” Zasseev said.

He has noted that the work is currently underway to determine the venue of the world football championship under the auspices of ConIFA.

The European Football Championship under the auspices of ConIFA was held in the Republic of Artsakh from June 1 to 9. The South Ossetian team then won the ConIFA European Championships. For the first time in history, the Republic has achieved such a significant triumph.

ConIFA (Confederation of Independent Football Associations; Confederation of Independent Football Associations) is a football organization formed on June 7, 2013. It unites football associations and national teams of countries (unrecognized and partially recognized countries, autonomies within recognized countries, ethnic teams), which were not officially included in FIFA and continental confederations. ConIFA has more than 40 teams, holds World and Europe Cups. The headquarters of the organization is located in the city of Lulea (Norrbotten province, Sweden).

The South Ossetian Football Federation (FFRSO) is a member of ConIFA since its formation. The first ConIFA championship was held in 2014 in the Swedish city of Ostersund. Then the South Ossetian team reached the semifinals. The prize of the best scorer and the prize of the best player of the championship were received by the players of the South Ossetian team.
