The issue of an agreement on dual citizenship was discussed at the meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov, and intensive work is underway on it, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic Akhsar Dzhioev said at the press conference in the Sputnik-South Ossetia press center.
“We raised the issue at the meeting with Sergey Lavrov, including with our Abkhazian colleague, too. This agreement was signed in September last year in Tskhinval. All the necessary procedures have already been completed by the parties. We expect it to come into force in the near future,” Dzhioev said.
He has noted that the entry into force of the agreement also presupposes the existence of a normative act, which will prescribe the entire mechanism for the simplified acceptance of Russian citizenship by residents of South Ossetia.
“This regulatory document is being intensively prepared. Its draft is being worked out and coordinated internally by the Russian authorities. Without this document, the agreement itself will not be able to be implemented, since the very mechanism of its action will be prescribed in this document,” the Foreign Minister has emphasized.
Dzhioev has assured that as soon as the document is ready, together with Russian colleagues, everything necessary will be done to make the agreement work and citizens of South Ossetia who wish to obtain Russian citizenship can exercise their right.
