Criminal case on the fact of genocide by Georgia has more than 300 volumes - Prosecutor General

South Ossetia continues to investigate the criminal case on the fact of the genocide of the Ossetian people by Georgia, Prosecutor General of the Republic Grigory Sobaev said.

"The defendants in the case are Mikheil Saakashvili and other officials who took part in the events of August 2008," Sobaev said at the meeting with President Alan Gagloev on Wednesday.

According to him, all persons have been put on the wanted list; the necessary measures are being taken.

“The investigation has been ongoing since 2008 non-stop and has more than 300 volumes, citizens are constantly applying, and burial sites are still being discovered. Groups go to the site and conduct examinations to identify the discovered remains. Injured citizens, due to the need to obtain certain certificates, turn to investigators, new victims appear, new circumstances are established, the damage received by citizens continues to be assessed,”Sobaev has clarified.

On the night of August 7-8, 2008, Georgia fired at South Ossetia from Grad rocket launchers. And then it began the assault on Tskhinval with the use of tanks. The Upper town of Russian peacekeepers, located on the southern outskirts of the city, was also under fire.

On August 26, President of Russia signed a decree recognizing the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
