South Ossetia and Russia: 15 years of diplomacy

September 9 is a significant date in relations between South Ossetia and Russia. On this day, in 2008, an exchange of notes took place between the foreign ministries of the two countries on the establishment of diplomatic relations.

15 years ago, on September 9, a meeting was held in Moscow between the Foreign Ministers of the Russian Federation and South Ossetia, Sergei Lavrov and Murat Dzhioev.

The exchange of notes between the two foreign policy departments was the logical conclusion of the recognition of the independence of the Republic by Russia on August 26, 2008.

On September 17 of the same year, the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance was signed (entered into force on January 20, 2009).

Two years later, in 2010, Russia and South Ossetia signed the agreement on the mutual location of their diplomatic missions.

The ceremony took place in the Foreign Ministry building on Smolenskaya Square. The document was signed by the heads of the foreign ministries of the two countries, Sergei Lavrov, Murat Dzhioev.

Interstate relations between South Ossetia and Russia have been successfully developing since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2009; to date, more than 100 bilateral agreements have been concluded in various fields.
