It is important for South Ossetia to maintain contact with the new Syrian authorities, and these contacts exist. This was stated at the press conference in Tskhinval by the Republic's Foreign Minister Akhsar Dzhioev, commenting on Georgia's attempts to influence Syria in order to revoke its recognition of South Ossetia's independence.
"This issue has been relevant lately, since we see that the Georgian representatives are trying to influence the new Syrian authorities through various channels in order to revoke the recognition of our Republic. But, nevertheless, it is important to understand that today in Syria, in the entire region, quite serious changes are taking place both in terms of geopolitics and in other areas. Nevertheless, it is important for us to maintain contact with the new Syrian authorities, and these contacts are existing," Dzhioev said.
The Foreign Minister has noted that recently Ambassador of South Ossetia to Russia Znaur Gassiev met with the Charge d'Affaires of Syria in Moscow.
"There is the understanding that our interaction will continue, and we proceed from the fact that we will take the necessary measures to maintain the status quo that existed between South Ossetia and Syria in 2018. Our Abkhaz colleagues are also taking certain steps, and I think that we will continue to advance our interests in terms of maintaining our positions regarding Syria. The contacts will continue," Dzhioev has concluded.
