A telephone conversation took place between the presidents of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Alan Gagloev and Aslan Bzhania, the press service of the head of the Republic of South Ossetia has reported.
According to the press service, during the conversation Aslan Bzhania addressed the words of support to Alan Gagloev and the people of South Ossetia in connection with the 16th anniversary of the August 2008 war.
“Alan Gagloev, for his part, expressed deep gratitude to Aslan Bzhania for fraternal solidarity and wished the President and all the people of the Republic of Abkhazia peace, well-being and prosperity,” the press service has noted.
On the night of August 8, 2008, Georgia launched the armed attack on South Ossetia. Russia came to the defense of the citizens of the Republic, many of whom were citizens of the Russian Federation, and its peacekeepers who had been serving in the Republic since 1992. As a result of the war in August 2008, more than 1,000 people were killed, 72 of whom were Russian servicemen. On August 26, 2008, Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia.
