On Sunday, the Republic of South Ossetia is celebrating the Day of Courage and National Unity—one of the most important national holidays, established in memory of the beginning of the national liberation struggle of the Ossetian people in 1989.
This morning, a flower- and wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Memorial to the Fallen Defenders of the Fatherland in the center of Tskhinval. The event was attended by President Alan Gagloev, Russian Ambassador to the Republic Marat Kulakhmetov, members of the government and parliament, leadership and personnel of the security agencies, veterans, and youth of the Republic.
After a minute of silence, members of the honor guard company marched in a ceremonial procession.
A public rally commemorating the 36th anniversary of the events of late 1989, which marked the starting point of the struggle for South Ossetia's independence, began at the entrance to Tskhinval, in the Zguderi Upland district.
The memorial events will be held throughout the Republic throughout the day.
