To mark the 18th anniversary of Russia's recognition of South Ossetia's independence, the Republic welcomed delegations from Abkhazia, Tatarstan, St. Petersburg, Kabardino-Balkaria, Dagestan, and the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania. Acting President Marat Kambolov met with the delegations.

"We remember well those who stood by us during the most difficult years. And we especially appreciate those who remain close now—when we need to build, develop, and think about the future," he has written on his Telegram channel.

Kambolov has added that this is how true friendship is tested—by time, distance, and a willingness to be there, not just on special occasions.

South Ossetia is celebrating one of its main national holidays on Wednesday: the 18th anniversary of its recognition by the Russian Federation. The decree recognizing the Republic was signed on August 26, 2008, by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

The Republic's recognition followed years of arduous struggle against Georgian aggression, accompanied by acts of genocide and terror against the Ossetian civilian population, as well as a lengthy blockade of the capital and districts of South Ossetia.
