Akhsar Dzhioev: Hugo Chavez’s decision to recognize South Ossetia is evidence of our shared values

On Thursday, South Ossetia is marking the 17th anniversary of the recognition of its independence by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

This date—September 10, 2009—is considered a pivotal moment in the history of the establishment of the South Ossetian statehood.

On the occasion, of this significant date, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia, Akhsar Dzhioev, sent a congratulatory message to his Venezuelan counterpart, Félix Ramón Plasencia González.

"The historic date of September 10, 2009, is forever inscribed in the annals of the South Ossetian statehood. The decision made 17 years ago under the leadership of Venezuela’s great son Hugo Chavez—a leader who demonstrated true solidarity with peoples fighting for their freedom—was not merely a diplomatic act, but a testament to our shared values," Akhsar Dzhioev emphasized in his message.

The Minister also sent a congratulatory message to Venezuela’s Ambassador to South Ossetia, Jesús Rafael Salazar Velásquez, noting the importance of strengthening bilateral relations.

Venezuela's recognition of South Ossetia's independence marked a significant step in the Republic's international standing and the development of its foreign policy ties.
