As the chairman of the NGO Women's Association of South Ossetia for democracy and human rights Lira Kozaeva noted, on 31 October 2000, the UN Security Council adopted a document that protects the constitutional rights of women in legal and law enforcement aspects.
"This document, if we analyze its content, focuses on the fact that women are the most vulnerable group of society and that they should be protected by the state constitution. In addition, they must be the most active fighters for peace, they should be involved in peacekeeping and conflict prevention. In our republic, suffered all the hardships throughout 20 years, this issue is very relevant ", said Kozaeva.
According to her, the main goal of the round table was to draw attention of official structures, the South Ossetian authorities, to the problem of women's rights.
"As a human rights defender, I am often involved in many problems women, who are subjected to domestic and other forms of violence. I can see how they are poorly protected by the state ", she said.
In her turn, the deputy editor of the republican newspaper "Yuzhnaya Osetia" Taira Gagloeva noted that such events once again prove that South Ossetia is based on democrniatic principles.
By marking this date, we join all the principles and rules that must support women. After those 20 years of hardships, after all the terrible events of 2008, issues and problems emerged, and I think that through such events we can solve them ", underlined Gagloeva.
The meeting emphasized the importance of women's participation in conflict prevention and peace building. According to Lira Kozaeva, similar events would be held in the rural districts of South Ossetia.
It is worth noting that on October 31, 2000, the UN Security Council adopted resolution 1325 on women, peace and security (UNSCR 1325), the first resolution adopted by the Security Council in the field of gender.
