A political science conference "August aggression of Georgia and the recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, geopolitical implications, lessons and conclusions", dedicated to the fifth anniversary of Russia's recognition of the independence of South Ossetia has started today in Tskhinval.
As noted by the Chairman of the State Committee of Information and Press Vyacheslav Gobozov, the main objective of the conference is the scientifically terminological comprehension of the outcome of the war in August 2008, the recognition of the independence of South Ossetia, the present stage of the Russian-Georgian and the Russian-Ossetian relations.
The conference brought together scientists, diplomats, experts, representatives of non-governmental and international organizations of South Ossetia, Russia, Abkhazia, Transnistria, Nagorno-Karabakh.
The conference began with a presentation of the book by the Russian experts Vladimir
Zakharov and Andrei Areshev "The recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia: political and legal aspects."
According to Gobozov, it is one of the most fundamental works dedicated to the recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Vladimir Zakharov has noted that the first edition was published a month after the war in August 2008.
"We all remember what happened during the five days war. I left Tskhinval on August 3, when the town was under intensive shelling, people were dying. However, no one expected what would happen later. All these days we were publishing, making statements through the Internet, because it was necessary to counter the storm of misinformation spread in the West, where Russia was announced as an aggressor. The West was not aware of the real situation and we did everything to fill that void, "- said Zakharov.
According to him, after the recognition of the independence of South Ossetia in Moscow was convened the extended international round table, where was presented his book.
"In this book we have substantiated the legal process of recognition, its legality. After three months, it was published a large number of copies, supplemented with historical aspects of the recognition, "- said the expert.
During the conference Vyacheslav Gobozov read out a letter of greeting by President Leonid Tibilov addressed to the participants of the conference.
"Five years have passed since that memorable August 2008, when the long-awaited peace came to the long-suffering land of South Ossetia. The strong and firm position of the Russian leadership stopped the bloodshed, the genocide of the Ossetian people, saved them from physical destruction. Two weeks after the operation to force Georgia to peace, Russia adopted a crucial decision to recognize the independence of the young Caucasian republics and put an end to their political vulnerability. The courageous step of the leaders of the fraternal state has galvanized the international community and radically changed the geopolitical situation in the region,"-says Leonid Tibilov in his greeting, wishing the participants of the conference fruitful work.
