The appeal of the Parliament of the Republic of South Ossetia addressed to the leadership of the Russian Federation regarding the recognition of the Ossetian genocide in 1919-1920. committed by the "democratic government" of Georgia, was sent to Moscow through diplomatic channels, the Foreign Ministry says.

On July 19, at the fourth meeting of the first session, the deputies of the Parliament of South Ossetia decided to send an appeal on the recognition of the genocide of South Ossetians by the Georgian nationalists to the Russian leadership, the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.

The text of the appeal, in particular, states: “In June 1920, the government of Georgia, which declared independence, sent troops to suppress South Ossetia, which declared its right to self-determination and accession to Soviet Russia. Georgian troops destroyed most of the settlements of South Ossetia.

The Georgian army, armed and equipped with the support of the occupying forces of Germany, and then replaced by British troops, carried out a mass extermination of the Ossetian civilian population, the victims of which were several thousand people. The survivors were forced to seek refuge in Russia. The Georgian authorities developed and adopted a program for the colonization of South Ossetia.

According to various estimates, the number of Ossetian population losses in 1920 ranged from 8 to 25 percent of its total number. The mass killings of Ossetians by Georgian troops and the deaths in 1920 were a direct consequence of the deliberate actions of the Georgian authorities aimed at the mass physical extermination of part of the Ossetian people and ethnic cleansing of South Ossetia.

The events of 1920 were not properly assessed, and the organizers and perpetrators of the crimes of genocide against Ossetians were not brought to justice

Accordingly, in the future, the Georgian authorities pursued a course towards the national suppression of South Ossetia in order to georgianize its territory. In 1989-1992 Georgia again attempted ethnic cleansing of the Ossetian population, and in 2008 only the intervention of Russia, which forced Georgia to peace, prevented the complete extermination of the population of South Ossetia.”

In 2020, South Ossetia will mark the centenary of this mournful date. In South Ossetia will never forget the crimes of the Georgian government committed on the territory of the Republic. Such crimes have no a statute of limitations.
