At a recent briefing at the Russian Foreign Ministry, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, has noted that the Republic of South Ossetia is celebrating a state holiday – the Republic Day on September 20.
30 years ago, the Council of People's Deputies of the South Ossetian Autonomous Region adopted the Declaration of National Sovereignty. By tradition, congratulations from the leadership of the Russian Federation will be sent to the leadership of South Ossetia.
According to her, South Ossetia has gone through a difficult path of statehood formation and the most important milestone was the decision of the Russian Federation to recognize its independence on August 26, 2008.
"On September 9, 2008, diplomatic relations were established between our countries, on September 17, 2008, an Agreement on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance was signed, and on March 18, 2015, an Agreement on Alliance and Integration," Zakharova said.
According to her, South Ossetia has passed a difficult path of becoming a state and the most important milestone was the decision taken by the Russian Federation on August 26, 2008 to recognize its independence.
“This is evidenced, in particular, by the repeated free expression of the will of the citizens of South Ossetia in the elections of various levels within the framework of the established democratic voting procedures, the almost double growth of GDP over the past 6 years and many other indicators. With the active assistance of the Russian Federation, many infrastructural facilities have been restored and built, including those destroyed during the Georgian aggression, dozens of institutions of important social significance, "Maria Zakharova emphasized.
She has noted that despite the restrictive measures in connection with the spread of coronavirus infection, a large-scale Investment Program to promote the socio-economic development of South Ossetia for 2020-2022 is being consistently implemented.
“The Russian Federation actively contributes to strengthening the foreign policy positions of South Ossetia and expanding its international ties. We are convinced that in addition to Russia, Abkhazia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru, Tuvalu and Syria, which have recognized the independence of the Republic, the circle of countries with an open mind to the new geopolitical realities in the Transcaucasia will continue to expand consistently, "concluded Maria Zakharova.
