On September 20, South Ossetia is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the formation of the Republic - one of the most significant events in the modern history of South Ossetia, which laid the fundamental basis of its statehood.

On the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia issued a press release, which noted that thirty years ago the people of South Ossetia in difficult conditions of political uncertainty, large-scale aggression and terror from Georgia, based on the principles of international law and current legislation, using their right to self-determination, made a fateful decision.

"On September 20, 1990, at the fourteenth session of the Regional Council of People's Deputies, the South Ossetian Autonomous Region was transformed into the South Ossetian Soviet Democratic Republic within the USSR, later renamed the Republic of South Ossetia. At the same session, the Declaration of State Sovereignty was adopted.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, all the necessary procedures were carried out in the Republic of South Ossetia to legalize and establish the independent state. In 1992, a referendum on independence was held, and then the Act of Proclamation of Independence of the Republic of South Ossetia was adopted, "the press release says.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the events that followed this decision, showed, that this step was the only correct one, which made it possible to preserve the people of South Ossetia, their right to the land of their ancestors, to national and human dignity.

"The Republic of South Ossetia has passed a difficult path to its independence and international recognition, which opened a new stage in its development. On August 26, 2008, President of the Russian Federation signed a historic Decree recognizing the independence and state sovereignty of the Republic of South Ossetia. South Ossetia has become a full-fledged subject of international law. Now its security is guaranteed by the Russian Federation on the basis of bilateral agreements.

Today, we can say with complete conviction that the Republic of South Ossetia has established itself and has confirmed its statehood. The country is confidently moving along the path of socio-economic development, building a modern legal democratic state, further strengthening alliance and integration with the Russian Federation, "the Foreign Ministry has stated.
