The Western countries' statement is a demonstration of double standards, the Chairman of the South Ossetian Parliament Alan Tadtaev told. the “Res” news agency.
“I have a counter question to the leadership of these countries. Why did they not hear the cry for help from South Ossetia for more than 20 years, from 1989 to 2008, when South Ossetia appealed to the entire international community with a request to protect the population of the Republic from Georgian fascism? This is a manifestation of double standards,” Tadtaev said.
On Wednesday, a number of members of the UN Security Council (Estonia, France, Ireland, Norway, Great Britain and the United States) issued a joint statement on the events of August 2008 in South Ossetia. Russia's actions in it are called illegal, Moscow is also accused of violating human rights. The countries that made the statement called on Russia to "immediately withdraw its military and security forces, and also to revoke the recognition of independence" of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The Speaker has noted, this statement does not change anything for South Ossetia.
“South Ossetia is building its path according to the will of the people. We held referendums, where our people determined their further path together with Russia. In the process of gaining independence, South Ossetia did not violate any international laws. And today, such appeals to the Russian Federation are inappropriate, because Russia can provide all documents to substantiate the recognition of South Ossetia,” the Speaker noted.
He has added that one should take into account the fact that the people of Ossetia, together with Russia, determined their path back in 1774, when the first ambassadors from a united Ossetia were sent to Russia and asked for patronage and joining the empire.
According to Tadtaev, the statements of the Western countries should have to condemn Georgia's actions against South Ossetia.
“These statements should have a different character; they should condemn Georgia for the crimes committed in South Ossetia. For the genocide of South Ossetians from the beginning of the 20th century, for the wars from 1989 to 2008. It is blasphemous on the part of Western countries to make such statements precisely on the eve of the tragic memorable date 08.08.08,” the head of the legislative body stressed.
Tadtaev has also noted that Western countries justify their actions with such statements.
“Whatever statements are made by Western countries, they must justify their actions, which only aggravate the situation between South Ossetia and Georgia. The actions being taken by the NATO countries are the joint exercises conducted on the territory of Georgia in the immediate vicinity of South Ossetia. This is the destabilization of the situation,” the Speaker said.
The head of the Parliament once again noted that it would be better if the Western countries took a sober view of Georgia's actions towards South Ossetia for so many years, and gave an adequate legal assessment of these actions.
