The memory of civilians, militias and peacekeepers perished during the military aggression of Georgia against South Ossetia in 2008 will be honored with a minute of silence, the official representation of South Ossetia in Transnistria has reported.

"The official representation of the Republic of South Ossetia in Transnistria has informed that in memory of those whose lives were taken by the war, on August 8 at 11.00 a memorial service will be held at the chapel of St. George the Victorious at the Glory Memorial of the city of Tiraspol," the statement reads.

They have reminded that Great Russia came to the aid of bleeding South Ossetia. "The Georgian aggressors were defeated and driven out of the Republic. Ossetia will never forget the heroic deeds of Russian soldiers, and will forever remain grateful to the leadership of the Russian Federation, which made a historic decision for the people of South Ossetia.

In these August days, all of Ossetia, all the people, like one big family, are sharing the pain and bitterness of those endlessly grievous losses. Hundreds of civilians, militias, soldiers and peacekeepers fell victims to the treacherous Georgian aggression. Time has passed, but the memory of the terrible tragedy and sorrowful losses of August 2008 will always live in our hearts, "the authors of the text noted.

Thirteen years ago, the war struck the land of South Ossetia. Hiding behind words about peace, having armed his troops with modern weapons with the help of overseas patrons, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili launched a special operation "Clean Field", the purpose of which was to destroy the Republic of South Ossetia.

On the night of August 7-8, 2008, with the support of artillery, columns of Georgian tanks and assault detachments moved towards Tskhinval, the so-called "restoration of constitutional order in the zone of the South Ossetian conflict" began. As a result of many hours of rocket artillery shelling, the base of the Russian peacekeepers was destroyed, government buildings and part of the residential areas of Tskhinval were burned. The Georgian invaders showed inhuman cruelty, killing old people, women and children. On the morning of August 8, Georgian aviation launched the first bombing strikes on the territory of South Ossetia and by the middle of the day the outnumbered and armed Georgian troops, despite the selfless resistance of the South Ossetian defenders, took control of a part of Tskhinval and several villages of South Ossetia.
