The Georgian side, ignoring the real danger of the uncontrolled spread of the coronavirus, continues to provoke citizens on both sides of the state border to illegally cross it, the press service of the State Security Committee of South Ossetia reported on Monday.
“Two years have passed since the illegal deployment of a police post by the Georgian side in the vicinity of the village of Uista (Tsnelis) in Znaur district, which is another evidence of the aggressive intentions of the official Tbilisi.
In the interests of ensuring the safety of the population and de-escalating tensions within the framework of the existing international formats, the leadership of the Republic of South Ossetia has repeatedly called on the Georgian authorities to withdraw the armed units and dismantle the post,” the KGB recalled.
They noted that due to the lack of positive dynamics in resolving the conflict situation, the South Ossetian side was forced to suspend the functioning of border crossing points in the Georgian direction.
“In the adopted decision, the authorities of the Republic were guided, first of all, by the interests of ensuring the safety of their citizens.
However, despite the restrictive measures for crossing the state border and proceeding from a humanitarian approach, the leadership of the Republic makes an individual reasoned decision for each person who needs to visit the territory of the neighboring state or return to South Ossetia.
At the same time, the main condition for a positive consideration of residents' appeals is the urgent and real need to cross the border, as well as the exclusion of the possibility of harming the security of citizens of the Republic of South Ossetia,” the KGB stressed.
The Committee added that today the catastrophic situation in Georgia in terms of combating coronavirus infection testifies to the correctness and validity of the measures taken by the leadership of the Republic.
"In many ways, it was thanks to the restriction of state border crossings that we managed to avoid more damage from the COVID-19 virus.
The Georgian side, still ignoring the real danger of the uncontrolled spread of the coronavirus, continues to advocate the policy of non-recognition of the sovereignty of the Republic of South Ossetia and provoke citizens on both sides of the state border to illegally cross it,” the Committee noted.
The KGB stressed that the department will continue to implement the necessary measures to ensure the safety of the population of the Republic and urges residents to comply with the established border regimes, incl. in the interests of localizing the spread of coronavirus infection.
