Thanks to the political events of 30 years ago, the Republic of South Ossetia has the opportunity to confidently move along the path of building and developing a modern state, according to a press release of the Foreign Ministry of South Ossetia.
“May 29 marks the thirtieth anniversary of one of the most important dates in the modern history of the State of Alania. On this day, the Supreme Council of the Republic of South Ossetia, based on the results of the referendum on January 19, 1992, implementing the will of the people, in order to ensure its security, adopted the Act on the Declaration of Independence of South Ossetia,” the Foreign Ministry said.
It was noted that the Supreme Council of the Republic of South Ossetia, in its decision, was guided by historical facts that served as the legal basis for the formation of its own statehood.
“In particular, there was no territorial integrity of Georgia before the formation of the USSR, just as during more than two hundred years of joining the Russian Empire there was no Georgia as a political and administrative entity with its own “national territory”.
Moreover, South Ossetia at that time was already part of the Russian Empire. As for the inclusion of South Ossetia on a purely geographical basis into the Georgian SSR in 1922, this was the work of the same Bolshevik Georgians - Stalin and Ordzhonikidze, who forcibly annexed South Ossetia to the Georgian SSR. Together with the denunciation of all state acts adopted since 1921, the Supreme Council of Georgia already in 1990 completely destroyed the state-legal grounds for the South Ossetian Autonomous Region to be part of the Georgian SSR,” the Foreign Ministry stressed.
The Foreign Ministry has added that the adoption of this important political document was dictated by the military-political situation that developed in the early 90s.
“In difficult conditions of political uncertainty, large-scale aggression and terror by Georgia, the people of South Ossetia declared their inalienable right to create their own independent state. Today we can say with confidence that this was one of the most important steps towards the legal registration and formation of the statehood of South Ossetia,” the Ministry said.
