The flower-laying ceremony at the places of death of the Defenders of the Fatherland took place on Monday in South Ossetia as part of the events dedicated to the 14th anniversary of the war in August 2008.

Flowers and wreaths were laid at the memorials by officials headed by President of the Republic Alan Gagloev, ex-presidents Leonid Tibilov and Ludwig Chibirov, Russian Ambassador to South Ossetia Marat Kulakhmetov, representatives of parliament and law enforcement agencies.

The participants of the event visited the barracks of the peacekeepers, the site of the death of Oleg Galavanov, the monuments to the hero of Russia Denis Vetchinov, the dead officers of the South Ossetian OMON, Amiran Bagaev and Azamat Dzhioev, after which they visited the Museum of Burnt Souls in the village of Tbet in the Tskhinval district of South Ossetia.

Commemorative events are being held in South Ossetia dedicated to the August 2008 events, when Georgia attacked South Ossetia.

On the night of August 8, 2008, Georgia fired on South Ossetia from Grad multiple rocket launchers. Georgian troops attacked the Republic and destroyed part of its capital, Tskhinval. Russia, protecting the inhabitants of South Ossetia, many of whom were Russian citizenship, sent troops into the Republic and, after five days of hostilities, ousted the Georgian military from the region.
