A meeting of the Coordinating Mechanism to Clarify the Fate and Whereabouts of Persons Missing in Connection with the Armed Conflicts of the 1990s and August 2008 took place on Friday in the village of Ergneti.
The Coordination Mechanism was established in 2010 under the auspices and technical and expert support of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), acting as a neutral intermediary. This exclusively humanitarian exchange platform brings together South Ossetian, Georgian and Russian participants.
According to the ICRC press service, the discussion included an update on the progress made since the previous meeting of the Coordination Mechanism in September 2021, as well as the efforts needed to clarify the fate of 122 persons still missing in connection with armed conflicts.
"An exclusively humanitarian dialogue between the participants, their continuous common involvement in the work of the Coordination Mechanism are of key importance in order to give families answers that will finally free them from a sense of uncertainty.
Outside of the dialogue, it is essential to increase the participation of the parties in the process of search and identification, as well as providing support to the families in order to achieve greater efficiency and sustainability," the press service said.
It was noted that, in accordance with International Humanitarian Law, the families of the missing persons have the right to know about the fate of their loved ones.
