President of South Ossetia Alan Gagloev, at the meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, has said that in the most difficult times, Russia was next to South Ossetia.

"We remember that in the most difficult times for the Republic, the Russian Federation has always been nearby. It has been supporting and providing invaluable support to this day. We also remember August 2008, when the threat of almost complete extermination hung over the people of South Ossetia, but thanks to exceptionally correct and timely decisions, the aggressor was stopped," Gagloev said.

He has stressed that today the South Ossetian fighters are showing their gratitude in deeds.

"Today, in the special military operation, Ossetian fighters, together with their Russian brothers, are defending our common history, common values, our common faith, many of them have been presented with state awards of the Russian Federation," President of South Ossetia has stressed.

Russia recognized the sovereignty of South Ossetia on August 26, 2008, on September 9 of the same year, diplomatic relations were established, and on September 17, 2008, a bilateral Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance was signed. On April 27, 2009, the Embassy of the Russian Federation was opened in Tskhinval.
