Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia commented on the discussion of the possibility of opening transit road traffic through the territory of the Republic.
“As known, on September 19, in the city of Vladikavkaz, a visiting meeting of the Russian-Georgian Business Council at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, created in February 2023, took place. At the end of this event, some Internet resources reported that during the meeting a proposal was allegedly made “open a road through South Ossetia.” It should be noted that on the official website of the Russian-Georgian Business Council this issue is not listed among the topics discussed at the meeting,” says the official commentary published on the Foreign Ministry website.
The Foreign Ministry has noted that the issue of the possibility of opening additional transport corridors in the Transcaucasia, including through the territory of the Republic of South Ossetia, has its own history.
The Foreign Ministry reminded that in November 2011, a bilateral Russian-Georgian agreement was signed on the basic principles of the mechanism for customs administration and monitoring of trade in goods, providing for such a possibility.
"However, the practical steps of all interested parties towards the implementation of such transit projects affecting the sovereign territory of the Republic of South Ossetia still depend on the assessment of their feasibility in South Ossetia itself, and, of course, on the results of direct negotiations between the interested parties with the official authorities of the state, followed by the formation of an appropriate regulatory and contractual framework, where Republic of South Ossetia can only be represented as the equal participant in the implementation of such a project,” the Foreign Ministry the statement reads.
