The leadership of South Ossetia is holding consultations with Russian colleagues in order to prevent an increase in prices for goods due to changes in customs duty rates on goods exported from Russia, according to the message published on the official website of the government of the Republic.
“From October 1, 2023, in accordance with the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 1538, the rates of customs duties on goods exported from the Russian Federation will change. This resolution applies, including to South Ossetia and Abkhazia,” the government said.
It was noted that according to this resolution, customs duty rates on certain categories of goods exported from the Russian Federation may increase to 7%.
“This measure will not affect a wide range of vital goods, namely: meat and meat by-products, milk and cream, yogurt, butter and sunflower oil, cheeses and cottage cheese, pasta, products of the flour-grinding industry (bread, flour confectionery, cakes , cookies and other bakery and flour confectionery products), products intended for young children, clothing, footwear, household chemicals, pharmaceutical products, gasoline, diesel fuel and natural gas, as well as a number of other goods,” the text says.
The application of new customs duty rates could lead to a number of negative consequences, including a decrease in the purchasing power of the population, the government said.
“In order to prevent rising prices for goods in South Ossetia, the leadership of the Republic is holding consultations with Russian colleagues and working out the possible ways to solve the problem.
Currently, Head of State Alan Gagloev is on a working visit to the Republic of Abkhazia, including developing a coordinated position on this issue.
Considering the high level of existing allied and integration relations, there is no doubt that a positive solution to the problem that has arisen will be found,” the text reads.
The government has also reported that, in accordance with the agreements reached with the Russian side, a reduction in gasoline prices in the Republic is expected.
