Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia called on Georgia to get rid of illusions regarding South Ossetia and Abkhazia and accept the geopolitical realities existing after 2008. This was stated to TASS by the head of the foreign policy department of the Republic, Akhsar Dzhioev, commenting on the statement of the candidate for Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze about the peaceful “return” of the territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

“The statement of the candidate for Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze about the peaceful “return” of the territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia is intended for internal audience. Similar statements at different levels have been made before. It is clear that they are not relevant for us. The Ossetian people, who have repeatedly experienced the "peacefulness" of their southern neighbor (Georgia - the TASS note), perfectly understands the true meaning and price of such words. We urge you to get rid of your illusions and accept the existing geopolitical realities that have developed in the region after August 2008," Dzhioev said.

Earlier, the candidate for Prime Minister of Georgia, in his program sent to the parliament, said that the Georgian authorities planned to continue the course towards peaceful settlement of relations with Russia, and that the Kobakhidze government, if approved, intends to seek the withdrawal of Russian troops from Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

On the night of August 8, 2008, Georgia carried out the armed attack on South Ossetia. Russia stood up to protect the citizens of the Republic, many of whom had by that time taken Russian citizenship, and its peacekeepers who had been working in the region since 1992. As a result of the five-day military conflict, more than 1 thousand people died, of which 72 were Russian military personnel. On August 26, 2008, Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and another former Georgian autonomy - Abkhazia, the corresponding decrees were signed by President of the Russian Federation.
