The annual patriotic event “St. George’s Ribbon” started at the Eternal Flame in Tskhinval on the eve of the Victory Day.
The event began with volunteers laying flowers at the eternal flame.
Then the children toured the capital on a motorcycle with a red banner.
The volunteers presented the first “St. George Ribbon” to the head of state, Alan Gagloev.
The children pinned a symbol of memory and military glory on the president's lapel and gave out a flyer that told about the history and rules of wearing the ribbon.
The head of state thanked the children and told them about the meaning of the colors of the St. George Ribbon.
“You, as the younger generation, need to know the history of the St. George Ribbon and the Great Patriotic War. Our grandfathers and great-grandfathers were fighting for our future and for today’s youth like you to grow up under a peaceful sky,” the President said.
A consultant of the Ministry of Culture Natalya Zhuikova has noted that the action will last until May 9 and will cover the entire Republic.
“Volunteers will distribute ribbons to people throughout the city and regions of the Republic. Along with the ribbons, flyers will be issued that tell the story of the creation of the St. George ribbon,” Zhuikova said.
She emphasized that in total the volunteers would distribute three thousand St. George Ribbons.
The first St. George's Ribbon event took place in 2005, the year of the 60th anniversary of the Victory. Black and orange ribbons became a symbol of memory of the victory won in the Great Patriotic War, a sign of eternal gratitude to the veterans who liberated the world from fascism.
