Russian military units are in South Ossetia on the basis of interstate agreements, Deputy Defense Minister of the Republic Vadim Siukaev said at the press conference in Sputnik, South Ossetia.
The press conference was dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the signing of the agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Ossetia on cooperation in the military sphere, which provides for the deployment of military bases in the region.
“If we go back 10-15 years, when we were monitoring the information field of our southern neighbor, then their mass media actively discussed the fact that Russian military units were in South Ossetia without any grounds for this. After the signed Agreement - on a joint Russian military base, all Russian military units are on our territory on the basis of interstate agreements between the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Ossetia," Siukaev has emphasized.
He reminded that on September 15, 2009, the agreement was signed between Russia and South Ossetia on cooperation in the military sphere, and on April 7, 2010, a second agreement was signed between the states - on a joint Russian military base on the territory of South Ossetia.
"In the same year, another important agreement was signed between the governments of the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Ossetia "On military-technical cooperation." Since then, this cooperation has been carrying out on an ongoing basis and has produced concrete results," Siukaev added.
