The agreement on the settlement of dual citizenship issues between Russia and South Ossetia will be fully operational after the issuance of a corresponding decree by the Russian President. This was announced at the briefing in Tskhinva by Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia Akhsar Dzhioev.
On Saturday, South Ossetia and Russia exchanged ratification instruments on the settlement of the dual citizenship issues.
According to the Minister, the agreement that has entered into force has a positive effect for those who wish to acquire the citizenship of the Russian Federation.
"Citizens of South Ossetia who had South Ossetian citizenship at the time of Russia's recognition of the Republic's independence, that is, on August 26, 2008, will have the right to submit documents to acquire Russian citizenship in a simplified manner," Dzhioev said.
The Foreign Minister has emphasized that the procedure for implementing this issue will be reflected in the decree of President of the Russian Federation, which will become the integral part of the agreement.
"The entry into force of this agreement today gives our Russian colleagues grounds to launch the mechanism for issuing this decree. The second step after this agreement enters into force is the decree of President of Russia," Dzhioev has noted. "We expect that this will not take much time," Dzhioev. has added.
According to him, after the decree is issued, internal regulatory documents of the Russian Foreign Ministry will be prepared.
"These procedural issues may take some time for the mechanism itself to work fully, and for citizens to be able to submit documents to the Embassy of the Russian Federation in South Ossetia," the speaker has explained.
As noted by the Minister, more than a thousand residents of South Ossetia have expressed a desire to acquire Russian citizenship.
They previously contacted Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia, to President of the Republic, and the Embassy of the Russian Federation.
