A mourning rally was held in the settlement of Dzau on the "Walk of Glory" in memory of the victims of the devastating earthquake occurred on April 29, 1991.
34 years ago, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 9 took the lives of 59 people. The settlement of Dzau was completely destroyed, and the village of Khakhet completely went underground.
The public and residents of the Republic, representatives of the country's authorities, headed by President Alan Gagloev, laid flowers and wreaths at the memorial to the victims of the tragedy. The participants of the event honored the memory of the victims with a minute of silence.
Alan Gagloev has noted that the pain of the Dzau district concerns not only the residents of this district, but all corners of the Republic.
"The entire Republic preserves the memory of that day. The Ossetian people experienced terrible grief: the village of Khakhet was destroyed along with its inhabitants. We preserve each one in our memory; we have no right to forget them. This is not just history - this is our pain that must be passed on from generation to generation. Their bright memory will forever remain in our hearts," the President said.
Elvira Magkoeva, a teacher at the Gufta School in Dzau district, shared her memories of that terrible day for the Republic.
"The number of victims could have been much higher, but most of the residents of Dzau and the neighboring villages were taking part in a mass rally, which saved their lives," she said.
It should be reminded that during the earthquake in the center of the settlement of Dzau, in the courtyard of the boarding school, a protest rally was being held against the decision of the Supreme Council of the Parliament of Georgia taken the day before.
Almost all residents of the district, employees of the government agencies and departments, students and teachers of educational institutions were present at this event, thanks to which it was possible to avoid a greater number of victims.
