Social and mourning events will be held in South Ossetia on Sunday to mark the 37th anniversary of the withdrawal of the Soviet troops from Afghanistan.

As reported to IA Res by the Republican Commission for Preparation and Holding of Nationally Significant Events, the memorial complex to the Afghan War veterans will be the central venue for the commemorative events.

"The Republic traditionally honors the Afghan veterans and remembers compatriots who honorably fulfilled their international duty. The program of events will begin this morning at 10:00 a.m. with a flower-laying ceremony at the memorial to internationalist soldiers. Immediately following, at 10:15 a.m., a rally will be held at the same location with the participation of the Republican leadership, representatives of the ministries, agencies, the public, and representatives of veterans' associations," the Commission has noted.

The commemorative date refers to the events of February 15, 1989, when the withdrawal of the Soviet troops from Afghanistan was completed. Over 200 young men from South Ossetia took part in the military operations in Afghanistan. Seven of them did not return. All of them were awarded orders and medals of the USSR.
