The presidential election in South Ossetia will be held on September 18, 2026.
The corresponding resolution was adopted at a session of the Republic's Parliament on Wednesday.
The question of setting the election date was brought before Parliament by Zita Besaeva, Chair of the Committee on Legislation, Legality, and Local Self-Government.
The deputies voted unanimously for the date. Of the 34 members of Parliament, 29 participated in the vote.
The early elections in South Ossetia are being held following the resignation of the Republic's President, Alan Gagloev, who resigned as head of state on June 23.
Following this, the Kremlin published a decree from Vladimir Putin appointing Gagloev as an Adviser to the Russian President. According to the Republic's constitution, the Acting President of South Ossetia is assigned to Prime Minister Marat Kambolov.
According to the Republic's constitution, in the event of the early termination of the president's powers, "elections for the president of the Republic of South Ossetia must be held no later than 90 days from the date of the early termination of the former head of state's powers."
According to the constitution, a citizen of the republic must be at least 35 years old, speak the state languages (Ossetian, Russian), and have permanently resided in South Ossetia for the last 10 years preceding the date of registration. The president is elected for a five-year term. The same person cannot hold this office for more than two consecutive terms.
