Communist Party Leader Elected as Parliament Speaker

The leader of the Communist Party Stanislav Kochiev was elected as the Parliament Sepcaker. Through a secret ballot, 22 MPs out 34 voted for him, 12 – against. Kochiev’s candidature was proposed by the RSO President Eduard Kokoity after consultation held with representatives of all political parties forming the Parliament.
Stanislav Yakovlevich Kochiev was born 7 April, 1954 in Kurta, Tskhinval district. Having graduated from Tskhinval School #6, he entered English and History Faculty at the South Ossetian State Pedagogic Institute. Upon graduation, he started teaching. Since 1978 until now, he has been teaching the History of Russia at the South Ossetian state University.
In 199, he entered the Baku Institute of Political Science and Sociology, which he graduated from in 1994.
In 1981 he was employed by the People’s Control Committee of the South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast as a head of the Complaints Department, then reassigned as the Head of Management Department.
In 1989, he was transferred to the Communist Party Oblast Committee to the Party Control Commission, then he held the position of Head of Ideology Department.
After the events of 1991, he joined the Government of South Ossetia (Committee for Normalization of Situation in South Ossetia). From 1990 to 1999, he held the position of Information and Press Minister of South Ossetia.
Since March 1993 until now he is the leader of the Communist Party of South Ossetia.
In 1999-2004, he was the RSO Parliament Speaker. С 1999 года по 2004 год был председателем Парламента РЮО. Kochiev was an MP of the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Parliaments.
He has been granted with the highest state award – Order of Honor. He was also granted with state awards of North Ossetia-Alania, Abkhazia, Nagorny Karabakh and Transdnestria, as well as those if the RF regions. He obtained awards of the Communist Party of the USSR and the RF.
He is a citizen of the RF and RSO. Married, has one daughter.
