Communication of the Foreign Ministry of South Ossetia in connection with the 20th anniversary of the Zar tragedy

May 20, 2012 commemorative events, dedicated to the victims of the Georgian aggression against the peaceful population of South Ossetia are being held in the Republic of South Ossetia.

Twenty years ago the Georgian national-fascists committed one of the most inhuman and brutal acts of genocide against the people of South Ossetia. May 20, 1992 on theLifeline, which connected the besieged city of Tskhinval with the rest of the world, at the village of Zar defenseless children, women and old people were shot point-blank from ambush. 34 people were killed, including women, children and old people, 16 people were injured. The oldest of the victims was 73 years old, the youngest - 12 years old. This massacre of the Georgian nationalists remained unpunished. Though the then leader of Georgia Eduard Shevardnadze officially acknowledged that the Zar tragedy was on the conscience of the Georgian armed forces, no attempts to find and punish the organizers and perpetrators of this heinous crime have been taken by the Georgian law enforcement bodies. Moreover, it is puzzling that some Western countries and the United States see Georgia as the victim of aggression and as some "fighters for territorial integrity"; they continue to support it in the way of entering into the North Atlantic Alliance. The increased pushing of Georgia into NATO reminds of the military aggression in August 2008, unleashed thanks to a comprehensive political and military support by the member countries of the Alliance.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia once again is calling to the international community, in the name of peace and stability in the Caucasus, to give an objective assessment of the criminal actions of Georgia.
