The Foreign Ministry appealed to the international community, as well as to the co-chairs of the Geneva discussions on security in Transcaucasia, and all participants in this international platform to pay attention to the growing tension in the border area
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia on Monday commented on the situation on the border of the Republic with Georgia. The text is posted on the official website of the Foreign Ministry.
The Foreign Ministry expressed concern over Georgia's " continuing provocative steps to destabilize the situation, accompanied by the increased presence of Georgian security forces along the entire perimeter of the South Ossetian state border with Georgia. The build-up of weapons stocks, the massive aggressive rhetoric of the Georgian leadership against South Ossetia, constant provocations on border territories, and the setting up of illegal police posts indicate that Tbilisi continues to dream of revenge and the seizure of foreign lands.
There is no doubt that Georgia has nurtured aggressive plans and the fact that over the past few years more than 50 different military exercises have been conducted on the territory of this country, the Georgian authorities have placed even greater emphasis on strengthening the armed forces according to the latest NATO standards, "the Foreign Ministry said.
The South Ossetian Foreign Ministry expressed regret that the confrontational course of Tbilisi to destabilize the situation in the border zone has recently been supported by a number of European states that pursue a policy of condescension and connivance towards Georgia, which it perceives as a signal for permissiveness.
"Based on this, one can understand the reluctance of Georgia to sign a binding document on the non-use of force against South Ossetia - the issue that the South Ossetian side regularly raises at the Geneva discussions.
Nor can it be discounted that the development of a spiral of tension in the border zone is becoming a traditional element in anticipation of political processes in neighboring Georgia, in this case, the parliamentary elections. At the same time, it is clearly evident that for some of the Georgian political elite, updating the South Ossetian and Abkhaz themes serves as an additional tool for attracting votes,” the document says.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia appealed to the international community to condemn Georgia’s dangerous course towards the creation of militarized zones along the perimeter of the South Ossetian-Georgian border, as well as to the co-chairs of the Geneva discussions on security in Transcaucasia, to all participants in this international platform to pay attention to the growing tension in the border area, Georgia’s ignoring of the generally accepted for the entire period of joint work of the important provisions aimed at maintaining peace and stability in the region.
"All responsibility for the escalation of tension and the possible further exacerbation of the situation near the borders of South Ossetia rests entirely with the military-political leadership of Georgia, as well as the states supporting its provocative actions," the Foreign Ministry emphasized.
