On the Walk of Fame and Memory in the settlement of Dzau on Thursday, wreaths and flowers were laid at the memorial to the victims of the April 29, 1991 earthquake.

Representatives of the Republic's leadership headed by President Anatoly Bibilov, the head and employees of the Dzau district administration, residents of the village, including schoolchildren, came to honor the memory of the victims of 30 years ago tragedy.

According to Totyr Tibilov, the head of the Khvtsev village administration, 30 years ago at 12.13 a.m. a terrible tragedy occurred in the Dzau district, the village of Khakhet with 42 villagers was buried underground.

“There could have been more casualties, but fortunately it was daytime when most people leave their homes. In addition, on this day, the Secretary of the district committee Zaira Dzhioeva initiated a rally against the decision of the Supreme Council of Georgia to abolish the South Ossetian Autonomous Republic. Many residents came there, and this saved them, otherwise there would have been many more victims,” Tibilov said.

According to him, it was decided to hold the rally on April 29, 1991, before lunchtime, so that foreign journalists in the Republic could attend it.

“I would like them to know about the fascist policy that Georgia was pursuing towards our people. At 12 o'clock the meeting began, and after 13 minutes the earth began shaking, rumble was heard, we stopped seeing each other. Destruction, casualties followed ...”, Tibilov is recalling.

Anatoly Bibilov, in turn, has noted that in the 90s terrible trials fell to the people of South Ossetia.

“The earthquake was preceded by a “bloody Christmas”, tragedies in the villages of Ered and Tsinagar, when civilians were brutally killed by the Georgian aggressors,” the President said.

According to him, the earthquake on April 29, 1991 claimed many lives, destroyed the entire area, buildings and buried the whole village.

“The hearts of the inhabitants of the south and north of Ossetia were filled with pain from heavy losses. But despite all the trials, our people survived thanks to their courage and spirit. They were understanding that it was necessary to build a future and a peaceful life for the sake of those people whom they had lost. We will never forget that the first to come to us was a committee of rescuers headed by Shoigu. Russia is always with us, and in the most difficult times, and I want to express my deep gratitude to Russia on behalf of our people,” the head of state emphasized.

The head of the district administration, Andrei Dzhioev, has noted that since 1991, last year, for the first time, housing was built in the District, thanks to the efforts of the Republic's leadership.

"Apartment building and private houses were built. Construction will continue in the future. All this gives hope and strength to the residents of the District, the belief that their life will get better and better," - said Dzhioev.
