Human remains dating back to the 90s of the 20th century, were found on Wednesday at one of the heights of the village of Ered in Tskhinval district of South Ossetia.

Representatives of the General Prosecutor's Office, the Red Cross mission, the Presidential Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic, Inal Tasoev, went to the place of the discovered burial.

According to the Ombudsman, the discovered remains, presumably, belong to one of the citizens of South Ossetia, who went missing during the military aggression carried out by Georgia against the Ossetian people in 1989-1992.

“Through the exchange within the Coordination Mechanism for Missing persons, we have obtained information that a potential burial place might be located here. Therefore, we came here, carried out several excavations with the help of an excavator, and as a result, human remains have been discovered. We still need to identify who these remains belong to”, Inal Tasoev said.

He has noted that after the removal of all the remains from the ground, they will be sent to the morgue.

“Next, appropriate measures will be carried out, a DNA examination will be carried out, the results of which we will compare with the DNA of the relatives of the missing,” the Ombudsman emphasized.

The Ombudsman added that excavations in the area will continue due to the likelihood of finding new human remains.
